World number one Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters after defeating Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4 in a strong quarter-final performance.
The Spanish star continued his excellent start to the season, improving his record to 16-0 in 2026. Alcaraz controlled the opening set and, despite briefly trailing 0-2 in the second set, quickly regained momentum to close out the match.
After the win, Alcaraz admitted that Norrie’s playing style created challenges during the match. “It was really difficult. Cameron’s style is tricky — his forehand has a lot of topspin and his backhand is very flat. But I stayed solid and aggressive when I had the chance,” Alcaraz said.
Alcaraz will now face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final. Medvedev reached the last four after beating Britain’s Jack Draper 6-1, 7-5. Draper had little time to recover after his impressive three-set win over Novak Djokovic in the previous round.
Medvedev dominated the first set and held his composure in the second. With the score tied at 5-5, the Russian secured a crucial break before serving out the match to reach his fourth consecutive Indian Wells semi-final.
Meanwhile, Germany’s Alexander Zverev defeated France’s Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells for the first time. Zverev will face world number two Jannik Sinner, who comfortably beat American Learner Tien 6-1, 6-2.
Svitolina Upsets Swiatek in Women’s Draw
In the women’s competition, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina produced a major upset by defeating world number two Iga Swiatek 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Svitolina took advantage of Swiatek’s early struggles, including five double faults, to win the opening set. Although Swiatek fought back to force a deciding set, Svitolina secured the only break in the third to seal the victory and reach her first Indian Wells semi-final in seven years.
Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka also progressed to the last four with a 7-6(0), 6-4 victory over Canada’s Victoria Mboko. Sabalenka won a first-set tiebreak without dropping a point before finishing the match in straight sets.
Sabalenka will next face Czech player Linda Noskova, who defeated Australia’s Talia Gibson 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina also moved into the semi-finals after beating American Jessica Pegula 6-1, 7-6(4). Rybakina will face Svitolina next and is set to rise to a career-high world number two when the rankings are updated next week.
