Electric vehicle maker Lucid Group has revealed a new two-seater robotaxi concept without a steering wheel or pedals, highlighting its push toward fully autonomous vehicles while aiming to turn cash-flow positive by the end of this decade.
The announcement came during the company’s investor day event in New York, where Lucid also shared plans to develop more affordable electric vehicles and expand its delivery capacity.
Lucid, known for its luxury models such as the Lucid Air sedan and the Lucid Gravity SUV, said it is preparing to launch a new mid-size electric vehicle platform later this year. The platform is expected to support more affordable EVs and help the company reach annual deliveries of around 100,000 vehicles in the medium term.
However, investors reacted cautiously to the announcement. Lucid’s shares fell nearly 8% after the event as concerns about the company’s financial position and EV market challenges continued to grow.
The EV maker has been facing supply chain bottlenecks and higher U.S. tariffs on imported auto parts. Earlier this year, the company also forecast slower production growth in 2026 after reporting a larger-than-expected fourth-quarter loss.
Analysts have raised concerns about Lucid’s liquidity. RBC Capital Markets analyst Tom Narayan said the company may need additional financing soon, which could limit how much funding it can secure from partners.
To improve its financial position, Lucid is working on cutting costs. The company expects a 50% to 60% reduction in unit costs over the medium term. It also plans to reduce capital spending as a percentage of revenue by 2028.
Lucid is also expanding its focus on autonomous driving technology, which could become a high-margin revenue source in the future. The company plans to offer a subscription service for self-driving features priced between $69 and $199 per month, depending on the level of autonomy.
The automaker has partnered with Uber and autonomous technology startup Nuro to commercialize a robotaxi service based on the Gravity SUV later this year.
Lucid’s robotaxi push places it in direct competition with Tesla, whose upcoming Tesla Cybercab driverless vehicle recently began initial production at the company’s Texas Gigafactory.
As global automakers accelerate the race toward autonomous mobility, Lucid is betting that affordable EVs and self-driving technology will help strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
