In New York on Friday night, tennis legend Novak Djokovic once again showed why he is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. Despite struggling with back pain in the early stages of the match, the Serbian champion fought hard to defeat British player Cam Norrie in four sets. The final score read 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3.

With this victory, the 38-year-old Djokovic became the oldest man to reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open since Jimmy Connors achieved the same feat at the age of 38 back in 1991. It was a special night, not only because of the win, but also because Djokovic created history once again.

A Shaky Beginning – The Back Scare

The match began with signs of trouble for Djokovic. During a point at 5-3 in the first set, he awkwardly raised his racket to hit a volley and immediately looked uncomfortable. He began stretching his back between points and even avoided chasing a shot from Norrie that went toward the corner.

Concern grew among fans as Djokovic called for medical attention. He was seen clutching his lower back and took a medical timeout, walking to the locker room with a trainer. For a moment, it looked as if the match could take a painful turn for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

The Champion Spirit – Returning Stronger

After treatment, Djokovic returned to the court, determined to continue. He managed to hold his serve and secured the first set. At the changeover in the second set, the medical staff gave him a back massage and also some tablets to manage the pain.

Even though he lost the second set in a tiebreak, Djokovic never lost focus. He adjusted his movement, relied heavily on his powerful serve, and fired 18 aces – his best serving performance in the tournament so far. His strategy paid off, as he dominated the third and fourth sets to claim victory.

Equaling Federer’s Record

This win marked another milestone for Djokovic. He has now reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the 69th time, equaling the record held by Roger Federer. Such consistency over nearly two decades speaks volumes about Djokovic’s fitness, skill, and mental toughness.

Facing the Next Challenge

Djokovic’s next opponent will be German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff. While Struff is not as highly ranked, Djokovic knows well that in tennis, every match can be a challenge – especially when dealing with injuries. Still, with his experience and determination, he will be entering the next round with confidence.

Injuries Have Been Part of Djokovic’s 2024 Season

This season has not been smooth for Djokovic. Injuries have troubled him in almost every major tournament:

  • Australian Open (January): Djokovic tore a hamstring during his semifinal against Alexander Zverev and had to retire after one set.

  • Wimbledon (July): He fell awkwardly during his quarterfinal match and tweaked his groin muscle. Though he managed to continue, he was visibly affected in the semifinal against Jannik Sinner, where he lost.

  • US Open (August): Now, in New York, he has been dealing with back pain. Despite the struggles, he continues to find ways to win.

This determination shows why Djokovic is admired across the world.

Djokovic’s Words After the Match

When interviewed on court after his victory, Djokovic smiled and avoided giving too many details about his injury. He joked with the crowd and said:

“I’m good. I’m as young as ever and as strong as ever.”

He added that his team always wants him to “suffer” on the court so he can gain more match practice. The light-hearted comment brought laughter from the audience, but it also showed his resilient spirit.

Oldest but Still the Strongest

At 38, Djokovic is competing against younger athletes who are often a decade or more younger than him. Yet, he continues to stay on top with his disciplined lifestyle, mental toughness, and unmatched skills. Reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam at this age is a rare achievement. Jimmy Connors was the last player to do so more than three decades ago.

Djokovic’s career is proof that age is just a number when combined with hard work, dedication, and the will to keep going.

The Atmosphere in New York

The crowd at Flushing Meadows witnessed a rollercoaster of emotions during the match. When Djokovic left the court for a medical timeout, fans were worried about whether he would be able to continue. But when he returned, fought back, and started hitting aces one after another, the stadium erupted in cheers.

His fighting spirit inspired everyone watching, reminding the world why tennis is not just about skill but also about heart.

What Lies Ahead

As the tournament progresses, Djokovic’s fitness will be under watch. Every match will test not only his tennis skills but also his body’s ability to recover. Fans are hopeful that he can manage his injury and go deeper into the tournament. With Federer’s record matched, Djokovic will now look to move past it and create yet another milestone in his legendary career.

A Champion’s Journey Continues

Novak Djokovic’s victory over Cam Norrie was not just another win in his long career; it was a reminder of his strength, perseverance, and love for the sport. At 38, he is still breaking records, still inspiring millions, and still standing tall among the best in the game.

The journey to the US Open title is still long, and with every match, Djokovic will need to dig deep into his experience and resilience. But if history has taught us anything, it is this – never count Novak Djokovic out.

His story in this year’s US Open is not just about tennis, but about courage, determination, and the belief that age cannot stop a true champion.
