In another proud moment for the UAE, His Excellency Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation PJSC (Empower), has once again been chosen as a Member Emeritus of the Board of Directors for the International District Energy Association (IDEA). This is the seventh time in a row that he has been reappointed, making it a remarkable achievement.

IDEA is one of the most respected organizations in the world for district energy – a system that cools or heats entire communities using shared infrastructure. Based in the United States, IDEA brings together top experts, companies, and institutions from across the globe to work on improving energy systems in cities.

Bin Shafar’s reappointment shows just how much his work is respected not only in the UAE but around the world. Over the years, he has played a key part in growing and improving the district cooling industry, making it more efficient and more environmentally friendly. He has also helped promote the UAE’s experience in district cooling on global stages, proving the country’s leadership in this important sector.

Speaking about his reappointment, H.E. Bin Shafar said that it is an honor to continue supporting the industry. He added that district cooling is no longer just a smart option — it is a must, both for saving the environment and for reducing costs. He also said that his role at IDEA allows him to share the UAE’s innovative ideas and work with others to build better communities using cooling technologies that save energy.

This announcement comes at a time when the world is searching for better ways to keep cities cool while using less power. As global temperatures rise, the need for efficient and climate-friendly cooling is becoming more urgent. District cooling offers a strong solution because it uses less electricity and helps cut down harmful emissions, all while saving money in the long run.

For many years, Bin Shafar has worked closely with IDEA, helping shape major decisions and encouraging teamwork among industry leaders. His efforts have led to big improvements in how cities plan their energy needs and use technology to create more livable environments.

His reappointment to the board is also a strong reflection of the UAE’s ongoing support for homegrown leaders. The country’s leadership continues to invest in local talent, helping individuals like Bin Shafar represent the UAE proudly at the international level.

Through his continued work, Ahmad Bin Shafar is helping place the UAE at the center of global conversations about sustainable cooling and smart energy systems. His leadership not only supports better energy solutions but also helps protect the planet for future generations.
