During their annual gathering in Ottawa this December, Assembly of First Nations (AFN) chiefs unanimously opposed a new pipeline agreement involving Canada and Alberta. This deal, which was revealed last week, could dismantle the federal prohibition on oil tanker traffic in northern British Columbia waters.
The AFN delegates adopted an urgent resolution that reinforced their support for the existing tanker moratorium, urging government bodies to recognize the climate crisis and honor the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Chief Donald Edgars of Old Massett Village Council dismissed the pipeline proposal as “a pipe dream.”
National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak stressed that First Nations rights are not to be compromised by governmental agreements. She made it clear that the chiefs are united in their commitment to defend their rights concerning significant projects within Indigenous territories.
Some attendees, including Stephen Buffalo from the Indian Resource Council, voiced concerns about the hurried nature of the resolution, suggesting it may not fully encapsulate the views of all Indigenous communities, particularly those engaged in oil and gas sectors.
Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to the chiefs, assuring them of respectful consultations and an acknowledgment of Indigenous rights, while highlighting ongoing issues like access to clean drinking water. He also unveiled plans for a joint first ministers’ meeting with First Nations and new legislation ensuring clean water by spring 2026.
Discussions will persist at the assembly, focusing on substantial projects and over three dozen policy resolutions.
