Afghanistan’s embassy in London will be closed following the disavowal of its diplomats by the Taliban, the U.K. Foreign Office announced on Monday. This decision reflects the Taliban’s recent actions to dismiss Afghan diplomatic staff worldwide. The closure, effective September 27, comes after the Taliban’s government, which is not recognized by Britain or most Western countries, disowned the embassy’s personnel.
Ambassador Zalmai Rassoul confirmed the embassy's imminent closure on the social media platform X, citing an “official request of the host country.” The U.K. government has not specified the fate of the embassy’s remaining staff.
Since the Taliban's takeover of Kabul in August 2021, diplomats from Afghanistan’s previous Western-backed administration have faced uncertainty. Many embassies have continued their operations under the former government’s banners but have been criticized by the Taliban for not cooperating fully. The Taliban has already sent its own representatives to countries such as Pakistan and China.

In July, the Taliban declared that it no longer acknowledges diplomatic missions established by the previous Afghan government and deemed documents issued by these embassies in the U.K. and 13 other European nations as invalid. This move aligns with the Taliban's broader rejection of Western recognition and their assertion of control over Afghanistan’s diplomatic representation.
Despite the Taliban's claim to power, no country officially recognizes them as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. However, a few nations, including Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, and China, maintain active diplomatic missions in Afghanistan. The international community, including the U.K., continues to navigate the complex situation of providing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan while refusing to endorse the Taliban’s regime.
