Late Monday night, Afghanistan experienced an earthquake measuring 4.1 in magnitude. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremor occurred deep underground, at a depth of 180 km.
This comes just days after a smaller earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck the region on September 28. That quake was much shallower, only 10 km deep, making it more likely to trigger aftershocks and stronger surface shaking.
Shallow earthquakes are usually more dangerous because their seismic waves reach the surface faster. This can cause stronger ground shaking, more damage to buildings, and higher risk to people.

Meanwhile, India continues to support Afghanistan through humanitarian aid and development projects. On September 18, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace, stability, and the welfare of Afghan citizens at the UN Security Council.
He highlighted India’s ongoing efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and strengthen local capacity-building initiatives. Ambassador Parvathaneni also expressed gratitude to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for their support and briefing on the country’s situation.
As the region faces repeated tremors, experts advise residents to stay alert and prepared for possible aftershocks following these earthquakes.
