In Afghanistan, heavy rains and snowfall have left a significant toll, with at least 39 casualties and over 30 injuries reported across different provinces, according to Khaama Press. The recent weather has also blocked several communication routes in various regions, disrupting normal life.
Janan Sayeq, spokesman for the Ministry of Disaster Management, highlighted the widespread impact, noting that thousands of livestock have perished due to the snowfall. Around 637 residential homes have been either partially or completely destroyed, and the lives of 14,000 livestock have been claimed.
The Salang Highway, a crucial transportation route, reopened to passenger cars after four days of closure due to heavy snowfall and blizzards. This underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and the importance of crisis management and preparedness.
Data from Balkh and Faryab provinces, reported by TOLOnews, indicate a devastating impact on livestock, with nearly ten thousand animals lost due to recent snowfalls. Residents express anxiety as heavy snow continues, roads remain blocked, and movement is severely restricted.
Abdul Qadir from Sar-e-Pul emphasizes the challenges faced by the population, particularly in terms of livestock losses and blocked roads. Amanullah stresses the urgency of government assistance, especially for those affected by road blockages and the plight of hungry livestock.
In response to the crisis, Afghanistan has formed a committee involving various ministries to address damages, particularly focusing on supporting livestock owners. Authorities have allocated fifty million Afghanis to aid those in the provinces of Balkh, Jawzjan, Badghis, Faryab, and Herat.
This situation underscores the need for improved infrastructure resilience and disaster response mechanisms to effectively mitigate risks. The citizens' calls for government assistance highlight the immediate challenges faced by the population, emphasizing the critical role of crisis management in safeguarding lives and property during extreme weather events.
