A shocking incident occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations final, where Senegal players walked off the field in protest against host Morocco, evoking strong condemnation from FIFA. Despite winning the match 1-0, the finale was overshadowed by chaos and a tumultuous atmosphere.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his disapproval of the Senegal players' and coaching staff's actions, labeling them as “unacceptable” for an international final. He emphasized that such scenes must be denounced and avoided in the future through a public statement on Instagram.
The decisive match, which took place in Rabat, reached a high tension level during stoppage time. Senegal seemed poised to clinch victory with a potential goal, only for it to be disallowed due to a foul call by the referee. Soon after, Morocco was granted a penalty following a video review, with the referee ruling that Senegal defender Brahim Diaz had committed a foul during a corner.
In protest, Senegal’s coach Pape Thiaw led his team off the field to prevent the penalty from being executed, resulting in a 15-minute stoppage. Tensions escalated as Senegalese fans clashed with police, intensifying the scene.
Infantino remarked, “Walking off the field is not acceptable, and any form of violence has no place in football. Teams must exhibit respect for officials and compete fairly.”
Upon resuming, Brahim Diaz’s penalty kick was feeble and easily thwarted by Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, leading some to label it one of football's worst penalty attempts. Diaz later issued a public apology to Moroccan supporters.
Extra time saw Senegal triumph thanks to a stunning 94th-minute goal by Pape Gueye, securing their inaugural Africa Cup of Nations title. While Infantino congratulated Senegal on their achievement, he reiterated the importance of players serving as role models for fans globally.
In response, Morocco’s football federation, under notable official Fouzi Lekjaa, has promised to take legal action alongside CAF and FIFA regarding Senegal’s departure from the pitch. They claim this incident disrupted the normal progression of the match.
CAF has deemed the events unacceptable, initiating a review of the footage before any potential disciplinary actions. Senegal's coach, Thiaw, may face serious consequences, though it's uncertain if these repercussions will extend to future African competitions or the FIFA World Cup.
Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui criticized the incident as “shameful,” stating it casts a negative light on African football as a whole.
