A group from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), led by Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, visited Bahrain to strengthen teamwork and share knowledge about protecting the sea and marine life. This visit is part of efforts to solve environmental problems in the Arabian Gulf and keep the sea safe for the future.

During their visit, they met with Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, Bahrain’s Minister of Oil and Environment and head of the Supreme Council for Environment. They also visited Arabian Gulf University and the University of Bahrain. The discussions focused on creating programs to study wildlife, solve environmental problems, and protect the marine environment and its resources.
At the same time, EAD’s research ship Jaywun started a mission in the waters of the UAE and Bahrain. The ship is special because it uses advanced technology to study the sea and help protect marine life.
On this trip, Jaywun collected more than 150 water samples from eight locations in the Arabian Gulf. The research included studying environmental DNA to learn about sea animals, using sound technology to study the sea floor, and testing the water quality to see how climate change affects marine life. They also studied harmful chemicals like heavy metals and microplastics, which can harm sea animals. Additionally, they looked into how sandstorms affect air and water quality.
The Jaywun ship stopped at Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Bahrain, where it welcomed many local groups. These groups included members of Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Environment, Nawah Foundation, Bapco Energy, and the Arabian Gulf University. Many school and university students visited the ship to learn about its mission.
The trip lasted seven days and included many environmental experts from the Abu Dhabi Environmental Research Network. This group works to solve environmental problems and find ways to protect the environment. Alongside them were 10 researchers from M42 and local experts from Bahrain.
Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri shared, “We are happy to work with Bahrain on this trip and research mission. This trip with Jaywun is an important step to share knowledge and find solutions for environmental challenges. Our goal is to protect the marine environment and make sure it stays safe for future generations. This research will give us new information to solve environmental problems.”
The Jaywun ship is one of the most advanced research ships in the Middle East. It was launched in January 2023 by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. It has advanced laboratories and tools to study the sea and environmental problems.
Since it started its work, Jaywun has traveled over 30,000 kilometers and spent 227 days at sea. It has completed 50 scientific studies and collected more than 30,000 samples. It has also trained 40 local trainees and welcomed over 11,000 visitors to learn about its work.
This trip is Jaywun’s second international mission after its first trip from Spain to Abu Dhabi, where it studied air quality and pollution in the sea. This new trip will focus on helping countries in the Arabian Gulf work together to solve environmental problems and protect their marine resources.
The research from this trip will provide important information about climate change, pollution, and their effects on the ocean. This research will help protect marine life and ensure the sea remains safe and clean for the next generations.
