Abu Dhabi Unveils Maternity Leave Support for Private Sector Under Emirati Family Growth

The Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority (SSA) has unveiled comprehensive details regarding its new Maternity Leave Support for Women in the Private Sector Initiative, which is part of the broader Emirati Family Growth Support Programme launched by the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi (DCD).

This initiative is designed to extend the duration of paid maternity leave for Emirati mothers employed in the private sector to 90 days. Under this program, eligible Emirati mothers working in private companies can apply for additional financial support to supplement their salary during their 90-day paid maternity leave, contingent upon obtaining approval from their private-sector employer.

The SSA will provide supplementary support for maternity leave, aligning with the practices already established in the public sector. This step reflects SSA’s ongoing commitment to promoting the growth and stability of Emirati families by facilitating a better balance between work responsibilities and newborn care for mothers employed in the private sector.

Her Excellency Dr. Bushra Al Mulla, Director General of SSA, highlighted the initiative’s significance, stating: “The Maternity Leave Support for women in the private sector underscores the Abu Dhabi government’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment for newborns and their families. This program enhances social and family cohesion, ensuring that infants receive the necessary care and support for their development within their families and communities. By strengthening family stability, we are adhering to best practices and social standards that positively influence overall family life.”

Dr. Ahmed Al Azeezi, Executive Director of the Social Support Applications Sector at SSA, added: “This initiative is designed to complement the Nafis programme by providing up to 90 days of paid maternity leave to Emirati mothers in the private sector. It relies on collaboration with private sector entities and companies, which we encourage to adopt this voluntary program. Our goal is to achieve the objectives of the Emirati Family Growth Support Programme, enhancing family stability and reinforcing its social role.”

To qualify for this support, Emirati mothers must work in the private sector, hold a family book issued in Abu Dhabi, and secure a no-objection certificate from their employer. Applications must be submitted within 30 days of the baby's birth, and include a valid salary certificate and bank account details. The child's birth must occur on or after September 1, 2024.

The SSA plans to release further details in September 2024 regarding how the service will be delivered and when applications for the Maternity Leave Support for Women in the Private Sector will be accepted.
