Abu Dhabi Expands Robotaxi Service to New City Areas

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), an affiliate of the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi, has announced the expansion of its Robotaxi services to new areas across the emirate. The move supports Abu Dhabi’s smart mobility goals and its long-term sustainable transport plans.

The announcement was made during the seventh Unmanned Systems Exhibition (UMEX) and the Simulation and Training Exhibition (SimTEX), which highlight the latest autonomous and smart systems technologies. ITC said the expansion is part of Abu Dhabi’s wider strategy to provide safe, efficient, and next-generation transport solutions.

Robotaxi services, which started in 2021, have already been operating in Yas Island, Al Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island, and Zayed International Airport. Now, the service is being extended to more high-density and high-activity areas, including Khalifa City, Masdar City, and Rabdan.

ITC also confirmed new routes will be added, including a connection between Abu Dhabi Corniche and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, giving residents and tourists more options for smart and autonomous travel.

The Robotaxi service is operated commercially by WeRide and Uber, in partnership with local operator Tawasul Transport, and runs under approved permits.

ITC said the next phase will include expanding the autonomous vehicle fleet to meet rising demand and support the rapid growth of the service. The centre noted that Robotaxi trips increased by nearly 150% during 2025, driven by earlier expansions and growing public confidence in the technology. The vehicles also recorded a 99.9% safety rate.

The Integrated Transport Centre added that it is working closely with the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council and its partners to strengthen the infrastructure needed for autonomous mobility. This includes improving monitoring and control systems, upgrading connectivity, and ensuring a safe and reliable operating environment.

The expansion highlights Abu Dhabi’s continued investment in smart transport and reinforces its position as a global leader in adopting advanced mobility technologies.
