Alzheimer’s is a sickness that affects the brain. People with this illness start forgetting things, get confused easily, and act differently. It gets worse over time. The World Health Organization says Alzheimer’s is the main reason for memory sickness around the world. Every year, more than 10 million people get this illness.
Now, doctors in Abu Dhabi can see if a person has a gene called APOE E4. People who have this gene, especially two copies of it, might have bad side effects from a certain Alzheimer’s medicine. The medicine may cause the brain to swell or bleed. If doctors know someone has this gene, they can choose a safer medicine that works better for them.
“We want to give the best care to people by using their DNA to understand what medicine is good for them. This helps make sure the treatment is right and safe for each person.”
This new test is part of a bigger project called the Emirati Genome Programme (EGP). This project is collecting DNA from people to help doctors give the right treatment to each person. So far, over 160,000 reports have been made. That is a big number and one of the highest in the world for this kind of work.
Doctors can see these reports on a safe online system called Malaffi, which helps all hospitals and clinics in Abu Dhabi share health information.
“Now doctors can look at a person’s DNA when they choose medicine. This helps avoid problems and gives better care. Abu Dhabi is working hard to be the best in health and help people in new and smart ways.”
This new report helps with many health problems, like cancer, mental health, breathing sickness, stomach problems, heart issues, infections, pain, and now Alzheimer’s.
The Department of Health and M42’s Biogenix Lab will keep making these tests better by using the newest health knowledge. Their goal is to help people feel better with the right treatment.
