A moderate 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, causing brief concern but no reported damage or injuries. The tremor occurred at 11:48 am IST and was recorded at a shallow depth of around 15 kilometres below the Earth’s surface. The epicentre was located offshore in the Bay of Bengal, which helped reduce the impact on populated coastal areas.
Authorities explained that earthquakes occurring at shallow depths can sometimes be felt more strongly near their epicentre compared to deeper quakes. However, due to the sea-based location and moderate strength of this event, it did not cause any visible destruction or harm to people. Officials said monitoring systems were activated immediately after the tremor to ensure public safety and track any further seismic activity in the region.
No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. Emergency agencies advised coastal communities to remain alert as a precaution, while confirming that there was no immediate threat. Disaster response teams remained on standby, and communication channels were kept open to share timely updates if needed.
The earthquake took place a day after a much stronger 6.8 magnitude quake was reported in the North Pacific Ocean. Experts clarified that the two earthquakes are not linked, as they occurred in different tectonic zones. Still, the recent events highlight the ongoing seismic activity seen across various parts of the world due to natural movements along major fault lines.
Seismologists continue to study such earthquakes to better understand Earth’s internal movements and improve early warning systems. While moderate offshore earthquakes like this one rarely cause serious damage, authorities stress the importance of preparedness and awareness, especially for communities living near coastal and seismic-prone regions.
