Winters pose challenges for those with bone and joint issues, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling, especially for arthritis patients. While no direct link between winter and joint pain is proven, various lifestyle and environmental factors may contribute. Cold temperatures can tighten muscles, reducing mobility, and studies suggest a connection between joint pain and changes in barometric pressure.
Dr. Uma Kumar, Head of Rheumatology at AIIMS, discussed lesser-known causes of winter joint pain, including weight gain, reduced sunlight, decreased activity, viral infections, and air pollution, in an interview with HT Digital.
How Eating Habits Impact Joints:
Regulating diet during the cold season is crucial, as increased food consumption and weight gain can exert pressure on joints. Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced diet to avoid added weight around the knee joint.
Vitamin D Deficiency:
Less sunlight during winter increases the risk of Vitamin D deficiency, impacting joint health and potentially causing joint pain.
Reduced Activity:
Increased eating coupled with decreased physical activity in winter can lead to weight gain and exacerbate joint pain.
Weather and Mood Influence:
Gloomy winter days may contribute to an increased perception of pain, as reduced sunshine can affect mood, leading to a more negative and depressed state.
Viral Infections:
Winter's common viral illnesses, exacerbated by indoor confinement, can contribute to joint pain.
Air Pollution Impact:
Air pollution in winter may also contribute to aches and pains, with evidence suggesting a possible link to increased rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity.
Managing Joint Pain:
To support joint health and manage arthritis symptoms, Dr. Kumar recommended stepping into the sun, avoiding inflammatory foods, and engaging in 150 minutes of moderate physical activity weekly.
Exercise Importance:
Exercise helps prevent joint stiffness caused by low temperatures, improving circulation and redistributing fluids around the joints.
Diet Regulation and Obesity Avoidance:
Regulating diet and increasing physical activity are crucial to managing joint health. Dr. Kumar suggested 150 minutes of moderate physical activity weekly, including yoga and meditation.
Sun Exposure:
Spending time in the sun aids Vitamin D synthesis, and supplements can be considered under a doctor's guidance for deficiency.
Hydration and Infection Prevention:
Maintaining hydration and taking precautions, such as wearing masks during viral infections, can help prevent the spread of illness, especially among the elderly.
Avoiding Inflammatory Foods:
A balanced, nutritious diet that avoids inflammatory foods like red meat, processed foods, excessive salt, and white sugar contributes to joint health.
Dr. Kumar concluded that lifestyle modifications, including diet regulation, exercise, sun exposure, hydration, and avoiding inflammatory foods, play a crucial role in managing joint pain during winter.
