People across Birmingham and nearby areas in the West Midlands witnessed a surprising sight on Thursday evening as the sky suddenly turned bright pink. Residents shared photos and videos on social media, wondering what caused the unusual glow.
Some believed it was a beautiful sunset, while others speculated it could be the Northern Lights. However, the real reason turned out to be much simpler.
Birmingham City Football Club confirmed that the pink light came from LED lighting at their St Andrew’s stadium. The club shared an image of the glowing sky on social media, captioning it: “Pink sky at night, Blues delight.”
The pink sky was visible not only in Birmingham but also in surrounding towns, including Hednesford in Staffordshire.
BBC meteorologist Simon King explained that the weather played an important role in creating the effect. He said that clouds and falling snow helped reflect artificial light into the sky. “Snow and clouds can reflect lights from roads, buildings and stadiums,” he said.
Graham Madge from the UK Met Office added that snow scatters blue light more strongly, which allows red and pink colours to become more visible in the sky.
Experts confirmed that the pink glow was not a natural phenomenon but the result of stadium LED lights reflecting off clouds during snowy conditions. Despite the explanation, many people found the scene beautiful and memorable.
