WhatsApp Banned 9.7 Million Indian Accounts in Feb—Know Why

Post by : Omar Nasser

WhatsApp has banned over 9.7 million accounts in India in February 2025 because they broke the platform’s rules. More than 1.4 million accounts were removed before anyone even complained about them. WhatsApp said it used new technology to find these accounts and stop them from causing problems.

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has over 500 million users in India. The company has worked on making the app safer for people by using advanced technology and experts. The report about the bans follows the rules of India’s government, which says social media companies must act against bad behavior online.

WhatsApp explained that many bans happened because of certain actions. Some people used bots or other apps to send many messages, which is against the rules. Others added people to groups without asking them first, or kept messaging people who didn’t want to hear from them. Some people sent fake news to others, which also led to bans. If too many people complain about your broadcast messages, your account could also be banned.

WhatsApp wants its users to be responsible. The company advises that you should always ask before adding someone to a group, stop messaging people if they ask, and make sure the information you send is true. They also suggest that you use broadcast lists carefully and follow the rules, which do not allow bullying or spreading false information.

If you think your account was banned by mistake, you can ask WhatsApp to check it again. To do this, you need to enter a code they send to your phone and submit a request. They will look at it and give you a reply.
