Utah driver jumps out of SUV moments before train crash, video shows

A driver in Layton, Utah, had a very close escape after jumping out of their SUV just seconds before a train crashed into it. The scary moment was caught on camera and quickly became very popular on social media, with over 13 million views on X.

In the video, shared by Collin Rugg, the SUV can be seen driving toward a railroad crossing with warning lights flashing and the barrier arm coming down. Instead of stopping, the driver tried to drive through the barrier, almost hitting it. The SUV ended up stopping with its back wheels still on the tracks.

Realizing the danger, the driver tried to back up, but they hit the barrier arm, leaving the front wheels stuck on the tracks. In a last-minute effort, the driver tried to move the gate back, but eventually jumped out of the SUV just seconds before the train hit it.

A Public Information Officer with the Utah Transit Authority said that it was very lucky no one got hurt. He mentioned that it’s easy to say what the driver should have done, but in that moment, the driver was likely in shock.

While the driver was okay, the crash caused over $100,000 in damage to the train.

The video got many reactions on social media. Some people said the driver was very lucky, while others asked why people take such risks. One user joked, “That SUV just flew into another world.” Some people felt sorry for the driver, saying panic may have caused them to act quickly. One person said, “I would freeze too in that situation.”

However, some people criticized the driver’s actions, asking why they didn’t stop when the warning signals were on. They said the crash could have been avoided if the driver had been more careful.

The incident has shown how important it is to follow safety rules at railroad crossings, and how lucky the driver was to escape in time.
