Dubai: At just 17, Tallulah Proulx has made history as the first female athlete from the Philippines to compete in the Winter Olympics. The Alpine skier is also the youngest Filipino ever to participate in the Games, currently taking place in Milan-Cortina.
Proulx carried her country’s flag during the opening ceremony and finished 50th in the slalom and 52nd in the giant slalom events.
Born in the United States, Proulx grew up skiing at Sierra Tahoe, later racing in Iowa, Colorado, and finally Park City, Utah, where she currently resides. Her father hails from Eastern Samar in the Philippines.
“This is a new era for the Philippines in sports on the global stage,” Proulx said. “I’m grateful to be the first Filipina in Winter Olympics and hope to inspire others to follow.”
She has also immersed herself in Filipino culture, learning from her grandmother’s cooking and traditions. Proulx had planned to visit the Philippines earlier, but the trip was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the Games, Proulx met top athletes like Paula Moltzan and Mikaela Shiffrin, gaining inspiration from her sports idols. She is now preparing for her first trip to the Philippines.
The Philippines has a rich sporting history, with legends like boxer Manny Pacquiao and sprinter Lydia de Vega. Following recent successes in gymnastics and tennis, Proulx’s Winter Olympics debut marks another milestone for Filipino athletes on the international stage.
