The eagerly awaited trade agreement between the United States and India faces a major setback. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to avoid a direct conversation with President Donald Trump has hindered progress.
In a recent podcast, Lutnick mentioned that the U.S. was keen to finalize the agreement and had encouraged Prime Minister Modi to personally reach out to President Trump to conclude the negotiations. However, Lutnick remarked that India appeared “uncomfortable” with the idea, leading to the call not happening.
This comment follows President Trump's criticisms of India's ongoing Russian oil purchases, warning that the U.S. may impose greater tariffs on Indian goods "very quickly." Over six negotiation rounds, these discussions have aimed to address the long-standing 50% tariffs on Indian products entering the U.S. market.
Lutnick also noted the U.S. has successfully reached trade agreements with other Asian nations like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, while the India deal remains stalled. He pointed out that the slowed negotiations caused those other agreements to have higher tariff rates, complicating talks with India.
When India later expressed interest in resuming discussions, Lutnick expressed skepticism, asking, “I said, ready for what?” indicating that India was not entirely positioned to proceed.
This situation highlights the intricate dynamics of U.S.-India trade relations, where geopolitical issues, tariff concerns, and diplomatic intricacies significantly impact the negotiation pace and outcomes.
