As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, the competition over donations and ad spending has escalated dramatically, with both campaigns pushing for every dollar, particularly in key battleground states. Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as a standout in this fundraising race, significantly outpacing former President Donald Trump in both donations and advertising investments.

One of the most striking moments of Harris’s campaign occurred when her face was projected on the massive Las Vegas Sphere, a digital billboard dominating the Strip. At $450,000 per day, it is believed to be the most expensive political ad in history. This grand display represents the nearly $1 billion Harris has raised since becoming a prominent Democratic candidate earlier this year. Her ability to secure both large contributions and widespread small-dollar donations has given her a clear advantage, allowing her to run extensive ad campaigns in crucial swing states.
The Democrats have been tapping into ActBlue, a popular platform that has processed over 113 million donations, to fuel their fundraising. On the Republican side, WinRed has been a similar engine, but with smaller numbers. Between both parties, campaigns, PACs, and affiliated political groups, a record-breaking $14.7 billion has already been spent this election cycle, which accounts for 92% of the total projected spending. Contributions have poured in from more than 11,000 different organizations, ranging from grassroots efforts to major players, including prominent names in tech and finance. Federal Election Commission data shows that of the billions raised, approximately $4.5 billion has been directed toward campaigns, committees, and various voter outreach efforts, making up over 31 cents of every dollar spent this election season.
One notable change this election cycle is Donald Trump’s shift to relying on large donations from a select few ultra-wealthy backers, a stark contrast to the broader base of support he saw in previous campaigns. Much of his funding has come from just three high-net-worth individuals: billionaire Elon Musk, casino mogul Miriam Adelson, and investor Timothy Mellon. These contributions have bolstered his super PACs, but his overall fundraising has still trailed behind Harris. While Trump’s campaign has raised roughly $355 million, Harris’s team has amassed nearly $875 million, enabling her to establish an extensive ground game in swing states and invest heavily in media outreach.
In terms of fundraising, the Democrats hold a strong advantage. Vice President Harris has benefited from steady contributions from both prominent donors and smaller contributors, underscoring her widespread appeal within the Democratic base. Harris’s campaign recently received substantial support from Hollywood donors, boosting fundraising as Election Day on November 5 approaches. This surge has given her campaign almost three times the financial resources of Trump’s. During the first half of October alone, Harris’s campaign brought in $97.2 million, while Trump’s raised $16.2 million, highlighting the disparity in financial momentum as the election nears.
Earlier in the race, the fundraising competition was closer, with Biden and Trump raising $284.1 million and $217.2 million, respectively, as of June. However, recent momentum has decisively swung in Harris’s favor. The Harris Victory Fund, which supports both her campaign and other Democratic groups, has raised an impressive $1.2 billion this election cycle, according to the latest filings with the Federal Election Commission. These resources have allowed Harris’s team to run extensive ad campaigns.
Steve Caplan, a professor at the University of Southern California, has observed how candidates today have an unprecedented array of outlets for reaching voters. “The amount of money the candidates are raising is extraordinary, and there’s no shortage of places to spend it,” Caplan noted. With countless media outlets and digital channels now available, campaigns can precisely target specific demographics and regions.
As the race heats up, Harris’s significant financial edge has enabled her campaign to saturate the airwaves and connect with voters in crucial regions. Her broad-based fundraising success, supported by elite backers and grassroots donors alike, has given her campaign the flexibility to strategically allocate resources, maintaining her lead in the high-stakes sprint to Election Day. With less than a week remaining, both parties are pulling out all the stops, but Harris’s deep coffers and diverse donor base may ultimately provide her with the crucial advantage as she seeks to secure votes in the final days of the race.
