Kyiv has reported the successful destruction of a Russian military transport plane stationed at an airfield located deep within Russian territory over the weekend. This announcement marks a significant escalation in Ukraine's efforts to target military assets beyond its borders, reflecting a broader strategy to undermine Russian military logistics.

According to the Ukrainian military intelligence agency, the Tu-134 transport aircraft was destroyed at a military airfield in the Orenburg region, approximately 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from Ukraine's borders. The operation occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday, although specific details regarding how the attack was executed were not disclosed.

In a statement shared on social media, the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine explained that these Soviet-era aircraft are primarily utilized for transporting high-ranking officials within the Russian defense ministry. The agency also released footage purportedly showing the aftermath of the attack, with flames engulfing the aircraft, although the authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified.

The claim comes amid a notable increase in Ukrainian operations within Russian territory over recent months, targeting various military sites and energy facilities as part of an effort to disrupt supply lines and logistics supporting Russia’s ongoing military campaign. This tactic is part of a broader strategy that Kyiv has adopted since the onset of the conflict, aimed at inflicting damage on Russian military capabilities.

While the Ukrainian government has remained firm in its assertions regarding the strikes, there has been no immediate response from Moscow concerning the specific claims made about the destroyed aircraft.

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there have been numerous reports of sabotage and arson attacks targeting military installations, railways, and other critical infrastructure across Russia. In response to these incidents, the Russian government has detained hundreds of individuals suspected of involvement in such activities, highlighting the internal security challenges Moscow faces as the conflict continues.
