On Saturday, the Metropolitan Police arrested two men in connection with an assault on a participant in an anti-fascism protest held in Victoria Embankment Gardens, located in the heart of the city. The "Stand Up To Racism" protester was allegedly attacked during a counter-demonstration against a nearby rally organized by far-right agitator Tommy Robinson.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the men were arrested on suspicion of assaulting the protester. Following the incident, officers administered first aid to the victim, who had sustained a head injury. The injured protester was then taken to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Contrary to some reports circulating on social media, the arrests were not related to the carrying of any flags, the police clarified.

The events unfolded as part of a larger policing operation, with approximately 1,000 officers deployed across London to manage multiple protests happening simultaneously. Thousands of people gathered in central London from late morning for the rally led by Tommy Robinson, known for his far-right views and as the founder of the now-defunct Islamophobic English Defence League.

In response to Robinson’s rally, Stand Up To Racism and other groups organized a counter-protest, also taking place in central London. To manage the situation and prevent serious disruption, the Metropolitan Police imposed certain conditions on both marches. These conditions included restricting participants to specific areas and streets and mandating that they disperse by predetermined times.

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, speaking ahead of the weekend events, emphasized the police's primary goal of maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all individuals exercising their right to lawful protest. "Our first priority is to keep the peace to ensure that those exercising their right to lawful protest can do so safely," he stated.

The large police presence and the conditions imposed on the marches were part of a broader effort to prevent clashes between the opposing groups and to minimize the impact on the city's daily life. Despite the heightened tensions, the police aimed to facilitate the right to protest while maintaining public order and safety.
