UCLA Resume In-Person Classes Amid Campus Protests Easing

UCLA is reverting to its normal operations with in-person classes resuming on Monday, according to university officials. This decision comes after recent clashes between pro-Palestinian protesters and law enforcement officers on campus prompted the relocation of classes to online platforms.

The unrest on campus emerged amid nationwide demonstrations against Israel's military actions in Gaza, which have persisted for several weeks. UCLA's move to shift classes online followed a significant police presence that dispersed a large protest encampment. Incidents of violence were reported during confrontations between protesters and pro-Israel counter-demonstrators.

In a statement posted on the university's website, UCLA announced its intention to maintain regular operations throughout the upcoming week. Despite the return to normalcy, the campus will continue to have a law enforcement presence to ensure safety.

Chancellor Gene Block emphasized the need for urgent changes in the campus security protocols and announced the establishment of a dedicated office to oversee campus safety. Rick Braziel, a former head of the Sacramento Police Department, has been appointed to lead this effort.

The escalation of protests across the United States has resulted in over 2,000 arrests in recent weeks, with some encounters between demonstrators and law enforcement turning violent. President Joe Biden has emphasized the importance of restoring order on college campuses amidst the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

The conflict in Gaza began with Hamas militants launching attacks on Israel, resulting in casualties on both sides. The violence has drawn international attention and sparked protests and demonstrations around the world, including on college campuses in the United States.
