Al Ain, UAE: In a remarkable achievement for science and clean energy, the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has been granted a new US patent for a revolutionary invention called the Metal-Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Battery Cell. This innovation marks a significant step toward a greener, cleaner future.
What makes this battery so special? Unlike ordinary batteries that use chemical fuels, this new battery can take carbon dioxide (CO2) gas — a harmful greenhouse gas — and convert it into electricity and useful chemicals like formate and hydrocarbons. In simple words, it can turn pollution into power!
The technology is called a zero-gap flow-type CO2 battery cell. This means the battery is designed to deliver high energy output efficiently, surpassing the performance of conventional batteries. Experts say it is faster, stronger, and more effective at storing and producing electricity.

Professor Dr. Ali Al Marzouqi, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies at UAEU, highlighted the impact of this invention:
"This new battery provides a practical solution to carbon pollution. It combines high efficiency with environmental sustainability. UAEU is now at the forefront of global clean energy technologies, showing that innovation can directly benefit our planet."
Dr. Muhammad Kashif Aslam, one of the lead inventors, explained:
"This is a true breakthrough. Our cell uses carbon dioxide as a fuel source, helping reduce emissions while producing clean energy. It shows how science and technology can support a green and innovation-driven economy."
The significance of this invention goes beyond science labs. With climate change and carbon emissions becoming major global challenges, technologies like the CO2 battery could revolutionize the way energy is produced and consumed worldwide. By turning a harmful gas into a valuable resource, UAEU’s battery not only produces electricity but also creates useful chemicals that industries can use.
This innovation aligns perfectly with the UAE’s vision for sustainability and carbon neutrality, supporting the country’s goal to reduce its environmental footprint while strengthening its role as a leader in advanced technologies.
Experts believe that this development could have a big impact on future energy solutions, making clean energy more affordable, efficient, and widely available. It also sets a precedent for other countries and research institutions, showing that tackling climate change can go hand in hand with scientific innovation and economic growth.
UAEU continues to push the boundaries of research, developing technologies that support a greener, smarter, and more sustainable future. The Metal-CO2 battery is a shining example of how creativity, science, and dedication can come together to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.
With this patent, UAEU has placed itself firmly on the global map of clean energy pioneers, showing that the UAE is not only a hub for business and technology but also a leader in environmental innovation.
