The UAE is preparing for a spell of unstable weather this week as the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a warning about heavy rain, hail, lightning, and thunder in several regions. Alongside the stormy conditions, morning mist will drift across the country, and evening temperatures are expected to drop, giving some relief from the scorching summer heat.
Weather Warning for Eastern and Southern Emirates
The NCM has said that the stormy weather will mainly affect the eastern and southern parts of the UAE. These regions include Fujairah and Al Ain, where heavy rainfall is forecasted on Wednesday and Thursday. The bureau’s online weather map shows these areas experiencing the most intense conditions, although the stormy weather could also reach other inland areas.

The warning emphasizes the possibility of thunderstorms and small hail, which can sometimes accompany heavy rain. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain cautious, especially while driving, as wet and slippery roads can pose safety risks.
Cause of the Stormy Weather: Low-Pressure Systems and Trade Winds
Meteorologists explain that the approaching low-pressure systems are pushing what is known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) towards the UAE. This zone is a region near the equator where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.
When these winds converge, warm and moist air rises and cools, forming clouds and heavy rainfall. These clouds, called convective clouds, can produce showers, thunderstorms, and even hail in some cases. The NCM notes that the trade winds, which usually move from east to west and curve toward the equator, are responsible for driving this pattern of unsettled weather.
Forecast Details: Rain, Thunder, and Hail
According to the NCM, convective clouds are likely to develop in the coming days, accompanied by rainfall of varying intensities. On Wednesday and Thursday, residents in Fujairah and Al Ain should expect the heaviest rainfall, which may include occasional lightning, thunder, and small hail.
While hail in the UAE is rare, these weather conditions are not unheard of, especially when low-pressure systems interact with the ITCZ. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure timely alerts for public safety.
Morning Mist and Reduced Visibility
Earlier this week, fog and mist covered parts of the UAE, reducing visibility on roads and causing delays in traffic. The NCM has forecasted similar conditions for Wednesday morning, warning drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution. The mist is expected to be most noticeable in the early hours, gradually clearing as the day progresses.
Morning mist, while brief, can create slippery conditions and limit visibility. Residents are advised to drive carefully and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles during these periods.
Temperatures: Daytime Heat and Cooler Evenings
Despite the unsettled weather, daytime temperatures are forecasted to remain high, with most areas experiencing temperatures above 40°C. The intense heat will continue during the day, but evenings are expected to provide some relief.
The NCM predicts that evening temperatures could drop below 30°C in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, offering residents a chance to escape the intense daytime heat. The combination of cooler nights and heavy rainfall may provide a temporary break from the prolonged hot weather that has affected the Emirates this year.
Record-Breaking Temperatures in 2025
This year has already been one of the hottest on record for the UAE. April and May saw record-high temperatures, with many regions experiencing extreme heat. On August 1, the mercury hit an astonishing 51.8°C, surpassing the previous record of 51.4°C for the month set in 2017.
The NCM has highlighted that while rainfall and thunderstorms bring temporary relief, the UAE continues to experience record-setting temperatures, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events during the summer months.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Authorities and meteorologists advise residents to take the following precautions during this period of unstable weather:
Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Drive carefully in misty or wet conditions to prevent accidents.
Secure loose objects outdoors that could be blown away by strong winds.
Stay indoors during hailstorms or lightning activity.
Follow official updates from the NCM for timely weather alerts.
Impact on Daily Life and Activities
The approaching stormy weather may also affect outdoor activities, events, and construction work. Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly and avoid open areas during thunderstorms. Schools and workplaces may issue guidelines to ensure the safety of students and employees.
The weather conditions, including morning mist and reduced evening temperatures, can also affect air travel and road transport. Travelers are advised to check flight and traffic updates before starting their journeys.
Understanding UAE’s Climate Patterns
The UAE’s climate is generally arid, with long, hot summers and mild winters. Rainfall is rare but can occur during periods of low-pressure systems and the movement of the ITCZ. The country’s geography, with deserts and coastal areas, can amplify temperature variations and the intensity of thunderstorms.
Meteorologists use satellite imagery, radar, and weather models to track storm systems and issue early warnings to the public. This helps minimize damage and ensures that residents can prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions.
This week, parts of the UAE can expect heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hail, and morning mist as low-pressure systems interact with the Intertropical Convergence Zone. While daytime temperatures will remain high, evenings will bring some relief. Residents are urged to stay updated with NCM alerts and follow safety precautions during this period of unsettled weather.
With the UAE experiencing record-setting temperatures this year, these stormy conditions offer a brief break from the extreme heat while highlighting the importance of preparedness during sudden weather changes.
