UAE Faces Job Displacement as AI Impacts Labor Market

The advancement of new technologies, specifically machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), is anticipated to result in the obsolescence of certain jobs, with a simultaneous need for the enhancement of skills in retained positions, according to experts.

Dr. Munir Majdalawieh, Department Chair of Information Systems and Technology Management at Zayed University, highlighted concerns about potential job displacement, especially in routine tasks susceptible to automation. However, he noted that despite these fears, the overall impact is likely to result in job growth.

The evolving technological landscape, as indicated by studies like The Future of Jobs Report 2023 by the World Economic Forum and LinkedIn surveys, is expected to create new opportunities and demand for roles requiring advanced technical skills and creativity. This includes positions such as data analysts, cybersecurity experts, and AI specialists. Additionally, there will be an increasing need for individuals who can bridge the gap between technology and various industries, such as digital transformation consultants and technology integration specialists.

Khaled AlWazani, Associate Professor of Public Policy at Mohammed bin Rashid College of Government, emphasized the importance of soft skills alongside technical expertise. He identified language, digital skills, and communication skills as crucial for future generations, emphasizing the need to communicate not only with people but also with machines, AI, and media.

While acknowledging the transformative impact of AI, AlWazani expressed the importance of studying diverse fields, including biology. He stressed the significance of learning topics and honing soft skills rather than pursuing certifications solely.

At the World Government Summit, Kristalina Georgieva, Chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), warned of a potential "tsunami" of AI affecting around 40% of jobs in the coming years. Despite this, Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, presented a perspective at the same summit, suggesting that the future of jobs might not solely be in technology. He highlighted the life sciences, particularly the understanding of human biology, as a complex and impactful field that could lead to future job opportunities. Huang encouraged a focus on life engineering, envisioning a generation engaged in working with proteins, chemicals, enzymes, and materials to engineer energy-efficient, lightweight, and sustainable solutions.
