An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale struck Bhutan on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at 2:42 PM Indian Standard Time on November 23, 2025. The epicenter was located at latitude 27.36 N and longitude 91.39 E, with a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the surface.
The NCS shared the details of the quake on social media, providing important information for residents and authorities. This is not the first earthquake to hit Bhutan recently; earlier in October, the country experienced another tremor measuring 3.1 magnitude, showing that the region remains seismically active.
Bhutan is situated in the young Himalayan Mountains, one of the most seismically active zones in the world. According to the Indian Seismic Code, the country lies within seismic zones IV and V, which are known for high earthquake activity. This geographic location means that Bhutan is vulnerable to earthquakes, making it an important area for disaster preparedness.
Shallow earthquakes, like the one that occurred on Sunday, can be more dangerous than deeper ones. Because the seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, they cause stronger shaking and can lead to more damage to buildings and infrastructure. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of major damage or casualties from this recent quake.
In addition to earthquakes, Bhutan faces other natural hazards. Climate change has increased the risks of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), which occur when water suddenly breaks through a glacier dam. Seasonal strong winds have also caused damage to rural homes, particularly during windstorms in 2011 and 2013. Landslides, flash floods, and forest fires are other natural disasters that frequently affect the country, causing loss of life and property.
The government and disaster management agencies in Bhutan continue to monitor seismic activity closely to ensure the safety of its citizens. The recent earthquake is a reminder of the ongoing need for awareness and preparedness in this earthquake-prone region.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about safety measures and follow instructions from local authorities in case of emergencies. Apps like the BhooKamp App provide real-time information about earthquakes and can help people stay alert during such events.
Overall, Bhutan’s location in the Himalayan region means it will continue to face seismic and other natural risks, making disaster preparedness and early warning systems vital for protecting lives and property.
