The UAE made a strong mark on the international climate stage as Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, led the nation’s delegation at the Belém Climate Summit in Brazil on 6–7 November 2025. The delegation also included Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Nature, reflecting the country’s top-level commitment to tackling climate challenges.
Held in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon and convened by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the summit gathered heads of state, ministers, and leaders from global organisations. Discussions focused on accelerating energy transitions, protecting forests, and enhancing transparency in climate action.
UAE Emphasizes Transparency and Ambitious Goals
In her opening address, Dr. Al Dahak underlined the UAE’s dedication to transparency, noting that the nation is expanding its reporting to include all six greenhouse gases. This move strengthens the UAE’s ability to track and respond to climate impacts effectively. She detailed national initiatives spanning renewable energy projects, sustainable agriculture, food security improvements, and eco-friendly infrastructure, positioning the UAE as a global model for integrated sustainability.
The minister also urged countries to adopt more ambitious targets within their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and to embrace globally recognized adaptation indicators, enabling transparent measurement of collective progress.
Nature Conservation Takes Center Stage
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak highlighted the UAE’s commitment to nature-based solutions during the launch of the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF). The UAE became an early endorser and interim steering committee member, pledging to support tropical forest nations and mobilize partners to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030, in line with COP28 UAE Consensus goals. “Protecting tropical forests is fundamental for our climate and the future of the planet,” she said.
Energy Transition: A Strategic Imperative
During the “Energy Transition” session, Dr. Al Dahak emphasized the need for a global shift toward renewable energy while ensuring access and security for all. She reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to global climate action and the 1.5°C target, supporting initiatives that aim to triple the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The Belém Summit, held ahead of COP30, set the stage for world leaders to discuss urgent climate actions, updated NDCs, and progress on finance commitments made at COP29. The UAE’s active participation underlined its role as a key player in shaping global climate policy and fostering sustainable solutions for the future.
