Salik Company PJSC has officially announced that the toll gates at the Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road will be activated on 24th November. This development follows the successful completion of the Al Khail Road Development Project by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which has significantly improved traffic flow and infrastructure in the area.
The Al Khail Road Development Project involved extensive enhancements, including the construction of five new bridges extending 3,300 meters and the expansion of 6,820 meters of road lanes across seven key locations: Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zaabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadir Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. These upgrades are designed to serve approximately 1.5 million residents, ultimately reducing travel times by 30%. The project also increased the capacity of intersections and bridges by about 19,600 vehicles per hour, thus improving overall traffic efficiency on Al Khail Road.

The introduction of the two new toll gates aligns with Dubai's master plan to develop and integrate its road networks and transport systems. It aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles, promote public transport usage, and enhance traffic flow across the city's roadways. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to redistribute traffic to alternative routes, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Ras Al Khor Street, and Al Manama Street. The activation of alternative crossings, such as the Infinity Bridge and Al Shindagha Tunnel, will further facilitate smoother traffic movement, encouraging residents and visitors to choose less congested pathways.
The new toll gates are integral to Dubai’s transportation policies, which support road infrastructure and the public transportation system. By optimizing the use of existing road corridors, these toll policies aim to encourage a shift towards public transit options, including metro, buses, marine transport, and alternative mobility solutions. Previous toll gate implementations have effectively reduced travel time in Dubai by 6 million hours annually and decreased traffic congestion on key bridges and roads by significant percentages, thus boosting public transport ridership by approximately 9 million passengers per year.
Global traffic consultants have endorsed the addition of toll gates at the Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South for their operational and regulatory advantages. The Al Safa South toll gate, located on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Meydan and Umm Al Sheif Streets, will implement a one-time toll fee for trips between the two gates within a one-hour timeframe. This strategy is designed to maintain optimal traffic service levels and manage the volume of vehicles effectively across the road network.
The Business Bay Crossing toll gate is expected to divert traffic from Jebel Ali towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road, leading to a projected 15% reduction in traffic on Al Khail Road and a 16% decrease on Al Rebat Street. Additionally, it will cut traffic on Financial Centre Street by 5% and save 20,000 hours daily in total travel time on the busy stretch of Al Khail Road.
Meanwhile, the Al Safa South operational toll gate aims to decrease right-turn traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street by 15% and reduce overall traffic from Al Meydan and Al Safa Streets to Sheikh Zayed Road by about 42%. Furthermore, it will optimize the use of nearby streets, enhancing the overall efficiency of the road network.
With these measures in place, Dubai continues to advance its commitment to creating a well-connected and efficient transportation system that meets the needs of its growing population while reducing congestion and enhancing mobility across the city.
