The Golden State Warriors claimed a thrilling 109-108 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night in the NBA Cup, thanks to an outstanding performance by Stephen Curry. Curry scored 49 points, including 31 in the second half, to outduel Spurs star Victor Wembanyama in an intense matchup. His two free throws with six seconds left sealed the Warriors’ first win in the NBA Cup.
Victor Wembanyama contributed 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks in 38 minutes. Despite his strong showing, the Spurs fell to 1-1 in the NBA Cup, losing a close contest that showcased the skill and intensity of both teams. Curry, meanwhile, achieved his highest-scoring game of the season, shooting 16 of 26 from the field and 9 of 17 from three-point range. His 49-point performance also tied him with Hall of Famer Michael Jordan for the most 40-point games after age 30 in NBA history, with 44 games.
Golden State swept the two-game set in San Antonio, rallying in the fourth quarter to win both matchups. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the back-to-back games in San Antonio gave the contests a playoff feel, noting that the games were fast-paced and fiercely competitive.
The fourth quarter of Friday’s game featured several heated moments, including officials separating Draymond Green and Wembanyama three times as they jostled for position on an inbounds play. Wembanyama completed an alley-oop dunk over Green, but it was waved off due to a prior foul by Green. Moments later, Green collected his fifth foul and stormed off the court, protesting the officials’ decisions.
In the closing seconds, Wembanyama blocked Jimmy Butler’s layup attempt with 33 seconds remaining, keeping the Spurs ahead 108-107. However, San Antonio failed to capitalize offensively when De’Aaron Fox missed a 17-foot jumper with 12 seconds left. Curry, fouled by Fox on the next possession, calmly sank both free throws to put the Warriors ahead by one point. Fox then missed an 18-foot jumper as time expired, sealing Golden State’s win.
Other contributors for the Warriors included Jimmy Butler with 21 points, Brandin Podziemski and Will Richard adding 10 points each, and De’Aaron Fox finishing with 24 points and 10 assists. Julian Champagnie led the Spurs with 14 points, complementing Wembanyama’s performance.
The Warriors will next play on Sunday against the New Orleans Pelicans, while the Spurs host the Sacramento Kings on the same day. This victory highlights the Warriors’ resilience and ability to perform under pressure, with Curry once again proving why he is one of the league’s greatest players.
