During the past week, the scorching heat in Saudi Arabia has claimed the lives of at least 49 Tunisian nationals, while several others remain missing, leaving their families anxiously searching for information.
In response to widespread criticism and public outcry over the handling of the situation, Tunisian President Kais Saied has taken decisive action. He announced on Friday the dismissal of Brahim Chaibi, the Minister of Religious Affairs, following the tragic deaths of dozens of Tunisian pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrimage.
The extreme temperatures in Saudi Arabia exacerbated the conditions for pilgrims, leading to a significant number of fatalities among Tunisians participating in the annual religious journey. The precise circumstances surrounding the deaths and the ongoing search for missing individuals have heightened concerns both domestically and internationally.
President Saied's decision to remove Minister Chaibi reflects the gravity of the situation and underscores the government's accountability in addressing the aftermath of this humanitarian crisis. Tunisian authorities and affected families continue to coordinate efforts to locate those still unaccounted for, while also providing support to the families of the deceased.
This incident has prompted a renewed focus on the safety and well-being of pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrimage, emphasizing the need for improved measures to mitigate risks associated with extreme weather conditions in Saudi Arabia.
