Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign rally on Saturday, where he was shot in the ear. The incident, bound to reshape the presidential race, has raised serious concerns about the security measures in place for the former president and current Republican candidate.
As the shots rang out, Trump's security detail immediately covered him, but he quickly emerged with blood streaking down his face. Defiantly, he pumped his fist and mouthed, "Fight! Fight! Fight!" The Trump campaign later reported that he was "doing well" and had not suffered any major injury.
The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks, who was killed by Secret Service agents during the incident, was a registered Republican. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, according to law enforcement officials.

Trump had just begun his speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, when the shots were fired. Grabbing his right ear, he fell to his knees before being shielded by Secret Service agents. Moments later, he stood up, his "Make America Great Again" hat knocked off, and was quickly ushered into a black SUV. On his Truth Social platform, Trump later described the incident, saying, "I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. Much bleeding took place."
Following the attack, Trump was taken to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, under heavy protection. The shooting, occurring just months before the November 5 election, has intensified scrutiny of the Secret Service, which provides lifetime protection to former presidents, including Trump. This incident marks the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since the 1981 attempt on Ronald Reagan's life.
Investors believe that the attack, coupled with Trump's bold response, might boost his chances of winning the upcoming election against Democratic President Joe Biden. Trump is expected to receive the Republican nomination at the party's convention in Milwaukee, which starts on Monday.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing about four shots during the rally. Ron Moose, a Trump supporter, described the chaos, "I saw the crowd go down and then Trump ducked, also real quick. Then the Secret Service all jumped and protected him as soon as they could. We are talking within a second they were all protecting him."
A man interviewed by the BBC claimed to have seen the shooter with a rifle crawling up a roof near the event. Despite attempts to alert security, the shots came from outside the secured area, according to the Secret Service. The FBI, now leading the investigation, expressed surprise at the suspect's ability to fire multiple shots.
In the wake of the attack, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee summoned Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify on July 22. "Americans demand answers about the assassination attempt of President Trump," the panel stated.
Trump supporters have criticized the Secret Service for the security lapse. Conservative activist Jack Posobiec questioned on social media, "How was a sniper with a full rifle kit allowed to bear crawl onto the closest roof to a presidential nominee?"
The attack has drawn swift condemnation from both Republicans and Democrats, as well as international leaders. President Biden stated, "There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it." Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that political violence must not be tolerated.
Biden's campaign temporarily paused its advertisements and communications in response to the attack. Recent polls indicate that a significant portion of Americans fear political violence could escalate during and after the election, a concern exacerbated by the country's deep political divisions.
Some Republicans argue that the attack may have been politically motivated. Representative Steve Scalise, who survived a politically motivated shooting in 2017, criticized Democratic leaders for their rhetoric, suggesting it might incite violence. "For weeks Democrat leaders have been fueling ludicrous hysteria that Donald Trump winning re-election would be the end of democracy in America," he said.
Despite his legal challenges, Trump remains a dominant figure in the Republican Party, having unified his supporters after the brief wavering post-January 6, 2021. His legal battles, including four criminal prosecutions, have been partially stalled by a recent Supreme Court decision granting him some immunity.
In this tense political climate, Trump's survival of the assassination attempt could influence voter sentiment as the election approaches. The coming weeks will reveal how this dramatic event impacts the presidential race and the nation's political landscape.
