US President Donald Trump has once again defended his aggressive tariff policy, claiming it has transformed the United States into the "richest" and "most respected" nation in the world. The president, speaking on his Truth Social platform, labeled critics of tariffs as “fools” and pledged that every American, except the wealthiest, would soon receive at least $2,000 from revenue collected through his administration's tariffs.
Trump's remarks come days after the US Supreme Court expressed doubts over the legality of his sweeping tariffs, in a case that could have far-reaching implications for the global economy and sets a major test of presidential powers.
What Trump Said About Tariffs
People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country in the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k's are Highest EVER,” Trump wrote. He emphasized that trillions of dollars collected from tariffs would help reduce the nation’s $37 trillion debt and fuel record domestic investment, stating, “businesses are pouring into the USA ONLY BECAUSE OF TARIFFS.”
Trump highlighted the positive economic impact of tariffs, including rising investments in US plants and factories, and said that a $2,000 dividend per person (excluding high-income earners) would be paid soon from tariff revenues. He argued that tariffs serve national security purposes and questioned why the president is restricted from using them when other countries can impose duties on American goods.
Supreme Court Scrutiny
The Supreme Court recently questioned whether Trump exceeded his authority under a 1977 law designed for national emergencies by imposing indefinite tariffs without explicit congressional approval. Conservative and liberal justices alike probed whether the president’s actions represented a major executive power move requiring clear legislative authorization.
The tariffs have faced challenges from affected businesses and 12 Democratic-led states, which argue that Trump’s use of the law overstepped executive authority. Lower courts previously ruled against the administration, but the government appealed, and the case now rests with a Supreme Court holding a 6-3 conservative majority.
The tariffs, which are taxes on imported goods, could generate trillions of dollars in revenue over the next decade. Trump has positioned tariffs as a cornerstone of both his economic strategy and foreign policy, pressing the Supreme Court to uphold his authority.
If the Supreme Court upholds the tariffs, the ruling would reinforce presidential powers in trade policy, potentially reshaping US economic strategy. Conversely, a ruling against the administration could restrict future use of emergency tariff powers and have global trade implications.
Trump’s public defense, combined with the promised $2,000 dividend, reflects his continued effort to highlight domestic economic benefits while countering legal challenges to his policies.
