Tokyo: Tropical Storm Maria struck Japan's northern Iwate Prefecture on Monday, unleashing heavy rains that disrupted travel and led to evacuations. The storm, which made landfall with wind speeds reaching 72 km/h (45 mph), has caused significant interruptions in both rail and air services.
High-speed bullet trains and regular rail services in northern Japan have been suspended due to the storm's impact. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have also canceled flights to and from the affected areas. Public broadcaster NHK reported that municipal authorities in Iwate have urged residents to seek shelter as the storm progresses.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings about potential mudslides and flooding following record-breaking rainfall over the past two days in the region. The agency anticipates that Tropical Storm Maria will continue its path towards the Sea of Japan.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida assured that the government is focused on managing the situation, saying, “We will continue to provide information to residents and support those evacuating.” Despite the disruption, no immediate casualties have been reported.
As Japan is currently observing a holiday, the disruption has affected both daily commutes and travel plans, adding to the storm's impact on the region. The government and local authorities are actively working to address the situation and ensure public safety.
