EU Backs UN Resolution Condemning Iran Attacks on GCC, Jordan

The European Union (EU) has welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan.

In a statement on Thursday, the EU expressed strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and political independence of the GCC nations and Jordan. It condemned attacks by Iran on their territories, which targeted civilian areas and critical infrastructure, calling them a violation of international law and a threat to global peace and security.

The EU also called on Iran to stop these attacks immediately.

“Security and stability in the Gulf, along with freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, are key for global and European security,” the EU statement said.

The EU added that it will continue diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote lasting peace in the Gulf and the wider Middle East.

All 27 EU member states co-sponsored the Resolution, alongside a large number of UN member states. This move reaffirms EU solidarity with GCC countries and Jordan, as highlighted in the EU-GCC Ministers’ Council meeting on 5th March and a video call on 9th March between EU leaders António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen with Middle East leaders.
