Severe flooding has struck Bolivia's Santa Cruz department due to torrential rains, leading to a tragic loss of at least 20 lives and leaving more than 20 individuals still unaccounted for. The flooding was triggered by days of heavy rainfall that caused rivers to overflow, wreaking havoc on homes, infrastructure, and entire communities. Rescue and search efforts are actively underway.
Deputy Minister of Civil Defense Alfredo Troche indicated that initial reports counted seven casualties, but as floodwaters began to recede, the number of confirmed deaths increased. He acknowledged that this toll may rise further as rescuers gain access to more areas. The extent of the devastation has prompted officials to declare Santa Cruz a disaster zone.
The crisis began late Friday with the Pirai River and other waterways overflowing due to continuous rainfall. A total of 22 communities were affected, particularly the municipality of El Torno, which experienced extensive damage. Many residents were unprepared for the swift rise in water levels, which submerged entire neighborhoods.
Emergency protocols were activated, forcing dozens of families to evacuate to safer locations. Approximately 600 families were impacted in El Torno alone, while in Colpa Belgica, nearly 1,500 families dealt with significant losses as floods destroyed their homes and agricultural lands. A critical bridge collapse has also hindered access to the city of Warnes, compounding the distress.
Amidst ongoing search operations, rescue teams and local authorities are providing food, shelter, and medical assistance to those displaced. Troche mentioned that logistical challenges are exacerbated by unstable weather and damaged roads, yet efforts to reach isolated areas are ongoing.
With further rain anticipated, the Bolivian government has initiated emergency relocations for residents in at-risk zones. Plans to declare a national emergency are also underway to facilitate quicker aid, mobilize essential resources, and ensure long-term support for affected families amid this escalating crisis.
