Tokyo: $8B futuristic city for 'mass human experiment.

Toyota's ambitious project, Woven City, situated near Mount Fuji on Honshū Island, Japan, is on track to be the world's most futuristic smart city, with completion expected later this year. Announced in 2021, Woven City aims to revolutionize urban living with sustainable practices and cutting-edge technology. The city will serve as a testing ground for Toyota's advancements in renewable energy and self-driving vehicles.

At the heart of Woven City's design are driverless cars, known as 'E-palettes,' which will navigate separate roads within the city. These vehicles will collect data on local traffic patterns, aiding Toyota's research and development efforts. Additionally, smart homes equipped with sensors will facilitate seamless communication between residents, buildings, and vehicles.

Powered primarily by hydrogen, Woven City prioritizes environmental sustainability by minimizing emissions and promoting hydrogen-based technology. President Akio Toyoda envisions the city as a hub for technological innovation, blending traditional Japanese architecture with modern robotics to create a unique living experience.

Initially accommodating 360 residents, including Toyota employees, Woven City plans to expand to accommodate up to 2,000 individuals. With a footprint of 175 acres and an estimated cost of £7.8 billion, the city is positioned as a 'mass human experiment,' exploring the potential of connected AI technology across virtual and physical domains.

Construction of Woven City began in 2021, employing a blend of traditional Japanese woodworking techniques and modern robotics. The city aims to foster collaboration between humans and machines, leveraging data and sensors to enhance connectivity and efficiency.

Toyota's vision for Woven City embodies the concept of a 'living laboratory,' where innovative technologies and sustainable practices converge. As the project progresses towards completion, Toyota anticipates leveraging insights from Woven City to drive future advancements in urban planning and development.
