The export sector in Thailand is anticipated to grow moderately between 2% and 4% this year, largely fueled by increased foreign investment, as reported by the National Shippers’ Council of Thailand (NSCT).
In a recent media session, NSCT Chairman Dhanakorn Kasetrsuwan expressed concerns over the nature of this growth. He pointed out that a considerable part stems from foreign enterprises establishing production units in Thailand, rather than a robust performance from local exporters.
“While exports are trending positively with an estimated growth of 2–4%, the outcome is not entirely promising,” remarked Dhanakorn. “A major share of this increase is driven by foreign investments, posing heightened competition for Thai entrepreneurs, particularly those in small and medium-sized businesses.”
Thailand's strategic position, robust infrastructure, and access to adjacent markets continue to attract overseas investors. Numerous multinational corporations have expanded their manufacturing endeavors in areas such as electronics, automotive parts, and processed foods, thereby boosting export volumes.
However, industry leaders warn that without substantial backing, local exporters may find it challenging to contend with better-funded foreign firms. The situation is complicated by rising production expenses, global economic instability, and unpredictable demand in significant markets like the United States, China, and Europe.
The shippers’ council has urged government officials to implement focused measures that support domestic exporters, including improved financing access, export incentives, and strategies aimed at elevating Thai firms along the value chain.
Despite these issues, authorities remain tentatively optimistic, believing that ongoing investments and enhancing global trade conditions could stabilize Thailand’s export landscape in the near future, contingent upon providing local businesses with adequate means to stay competitive.
