Thailand has recently unveiled a strategy to draw visitors back to the country by introducing a comprehensive initiative called the Thailand Traveller Safety scheme. Announced by the tourism minister, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the program aims to address concerns and uncertainties among tourists, especially in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Thailand Traveller Safety scheme, which commenced on January 1 and is scheduled to continue until August 31, offers substantial medical coverage in case of accidents. Under this scheme, the Thai government is willing to cover expenses up to 500,000 baht (equivalent to $14,000) and provide compensation of up to one million baht in the unfortunate event of death during a visitor's stay.

Minister Sudawan emphasized that the campaign is designed to convey a sense of security to foreign tourists, assuring them that they will be well taken care of throughout their time in Thailand. Given the setbacks suffered by the crucial tourism sector during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government is keen to rebuild trust and encourage the return of international travelers.

It's noteworthy that the Thailand Traveller Safety scheme has certain exclusions. It explicitly states that the coverage will not extend to accidents caused by negligence, intent, illegal acts, or risky behavior. This distinction is crucial in providing clarity on the scope of the medical coverage offered.

To participate in the program, tourists can register through the dedicated Thailand Traveller Safety website at tts.go.th. This online platform facilitates easy enrollment and access to information about the scheme.

Despite a notable increase in the number of visitors to Thailand in 2023, reaching 28 million compared to the previous year's 11 million, the figures are still significantly lower than the pre-pandemic levels of 40 million in 2019. The government's ambitious target for 2024 is to attract 35 million visitors, with a corresponding revenue goal of $55 billion. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revitalize and sustain the tourism industry, a sector that has traditionally been a major contributor to Thailand's economic prosperity.
