During the Paris Olympics 2024, a touching display of sportsmanship captured the hearts of many. Brazil's Tamires Morena garnered widespread admiration after helping Angolan captain Albertina Kassoma following a serious injury. The incident occurred during the final Preliminary Round Group B women's handball match.

In a dramatic moment, Kassoma fell to the court after missing a shot and was unable to get up, requiring immediate medical attention. After an initial examination by the Angolan team physician, Kassoma was assisted by Brazil’s goalkeeper, Gabriela Moreschi. However, it was Morena’s act of kindness that truly stood out.

Witnessing Kassoma's pain and struggling to stand, Morena rushed to her side. Despite the chaos of the game and the intensity of the match, Morena carefully lifted Kassoma and carried her across the court to the sidelines. The heartfelt gesture was met with enthusiastic applause from the 5,800 spectators at the South Paris Arena 6.

Morena shared her thoughts with Olympics.com, reflecting on the incident: “The injury happened right near me. Initially, I continued playing, not realizing the seriousness of her condition. When I saw her on the ground, I thought it was unlikely she would be able to stand up on her own. Albertina and I have been friends for many years, playing together in Romania. There was no question in my mind that I needed to help her, as I knew it would be very difficult for her to leave the court on her own. I have a deep respect and affection for her.”

During the brief respite, the two exchanged a few words in their native Portuguese. Morena recounted that Kassoma expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you very much, my friend. Only you could lift me up. I was very hurt.” Despite the injury, Kassoma’s spirits were high, and Morena hoped for her swift recovery. The bond between the two athletes, strengthened over years of friendship and shared experiences, was evident in their interaction.

Morena continued, “We are both getting older and don’t have much time for nightlife, but we are lifelong friends who enjoy simple moments like sharing a coffee. I have great respect for the Angolan team and their journey. Although only one team could advance, that’s the nature of sports.”

This act of compassion and camaraderie not only highlighted the values of friendship and sportsmanship but also resonated widely with audiences, reinforcing the spirit of the Olympics.
