Sunita Williams, an Indian-American astronaut, remains stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS) due to a critical issue with the Starliner rocket. Initially scheduled to return to Earth on June 13 alongside colleague Butch Wilmore, their reentry plans have been indefinitely delayed. NASA had initially aimed for a July 2 return date, but uncertainties persist.

The delay stems from a helium leak discovered on the Starliner before launch, which NASA and Boeing managers were aware of but deemed too minor to pose a risk. Despite this assessment, the issue has escalated, with additional helium leaks detected after the launch and one thruster becoming unusable. This setback follows a prior postponement due to a different leak.

NASA has maintained that the situation is under control, asserting that Williams and Wilmore can undock and return if necessary. However, ongoing tests and concerns about the rocket's performance raise doubts about the safety of a six-hour return trip.

Boeing, the contractor responsible for the Starliner, faces mounting scrutiny over safety lapses. The company has been criticized for cost overruns and quality concerns related to the spacecraft, which is intended to be NASA's second means of transporting astronauts to the ISS alongside SpaceX's Crew Dragon.

In a separate development, Boeing faces potential criminal charges from U.S. prosecutors for violating a deferred-prosecution agreement related to previous safety issues with its 737 Max aircraft. This legal challenge could impact Boeing's standing and its future contracts with NASA and other aerospace endeavors.

The ongoing delays and controversies surrounding the Starliner program underscore the challenges facing Boeing and NASA in ensuring the safety and reliability of manned space missions.
