In a dramatic twist during his recent state visit to the United Kingdom, US President Donald Trump revealed that he deliberately chose not to invite London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to the prestigious state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to the United States, President Trump described the London Mayor as “among the worst mayors in the world,” asserting that although Sir Sadiq had wished to attend, he had personally requested that he be excluded.
This latest episode intensifies the long-standing feud between the two leaders, a rivalry that has simmered for nearly a decade. Trump has repeatedly criticized Sir Sadiq, most notably during the mayor’s handling of crime and immigration in London. “I think the Mayor of London, Khan, is among the worst mayors in the world, and we have some bad ones,” Trump said. “I think he’s done a terrible job. Crime in London is through the roof. I asked that he not be there. He wanted to be there, as I understand; I didn’t want him.”

Despite Trump’s rebuke, sources close to Sir Sadiq emphasized that the Mayor neither sought nor expected an invitation. They dismissed the US President’s remarks as divisive rhetoric, highlighting London’s status as a thriving, open, and globally respected metropolis. “Trump’s politics is one of fear and division. This includes talking down our great capital city,” said a spokesperson. “London is a global success story – it’s open, dynamic, and safer than major US cities. Perhaps that’s one reason record numbers of Americans are choosing to make London their home.”
The animosity between Trump and Sir Sadiq dates back to 2015, when the Labour politician publicly condemned Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. In subsequent years, the feud escalated with Trump challenging the mayor to an IQ test, criticizing his handling of the London Bridge terror attack in 2017, and labeling him a “stone-cold loser.” During Trump’s first state visit to the UK in 2019, Sir Sadiq approved the flying of a giant inflatable “Trump Baby” blimp above Parliament, further fueling tensions.
Even during Trump’s recent visit, the controversy lingered. The President made pointed comments about Sir Sadiq during a press conference with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in Scotland, calling him a “nasty person,” prompting the prime minister to quickly interject, “He’s a friend of mine, actually.”
The second state visit by a sitting US president—an event marked by grandeur and ceremonial pomp—was overshadowed by protests in London’s Parliament Square. Thousands of demonstrators rallied against the visit, and four individuals were arrested after projecting images of Trump alongside convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein onto Windsor Castle prior to the banquet.
This latest clash between the US President and the London Mayor serves as a reminder of their ongoing political and personal friction, highlighting the broader ideological divide that continues to make headlines across the Atlantic.
