South Korea Exports Hit Record $65.95B on Strong Chip Demand

South Korea’s export sector is experiencing a remarkable upswing, with September shipments rising 12.7 percent compared to last year, fueled by strong global demand for semiconductors. Government data released on Wednesday revealed that outbound shipments reached a record $65.95 billion, marking the highest level since March 2022.

For the third consecutive month, exports showed year-on-year growth, highlighting the resilience of the country’s trade sector amid global economic fluctuations. The semiconductor industry, a cornerstone of South Korea’s export economy, played a pivotal role in this surge, alongside steady demand in other high-tech sectors.

In the third quarter of 2025, exports totaled $185.03 billion, surpassing the $180 billion threshold and setting a new quarterly record for the nation. Meanwhile, imports fell by 8.2 percent year-on-year in September, totaling $56.4 billion, which led to a trade surplus of $5.64 billion.

The sustained export growth underscores South Korea’s strategic position in global technology supply chains and the ongoing strength of its industrial output. Analysts note that while global economic uncertainties persist, the country’s focus on semiconductors and advanced electronics is providing a stable foundation for trade performance in the near term.
