Sonia Raman has become the first person of Indian origin to serve as a head coach in the WNBA, signing a multi-year deal with the Seattle Storm. Her appointment marks a historic milestone for diversity in professional basketball and highlights her growing influence in the sport.
Raman brings extensive coaching experience to the Storm, having previously worked as an NBA assistant. She served with the Memphis Grizzlies from 2020 to 2024 and spent the last season with the New York Liberty. Her career demonstrates a proven ability to develop talent and contribute strategically to elite basketball programs.
Raman replaces Noelle Quinn, who was relieved of her duties on September 21 following a first-round playoff loss. Quinn compiled a 97-89 record over five seasons and had stepped in midway through 2021. Her departure initiated Seattle Storm’s first full coaching search since 2017, signaling a new chapter for the franchise.
Seattle’s general manager emphasized the need for a leader capable of establishing team identity, building chemistry, and instilling confidence. Raman inherits a roster in transition, with several key All-Stars entering unrestricted free agency. The team plans to maintain a competitive edge while integrating a fresh strategic direction under her leadership.
While stars like Skylar Diggins, Nneka Ogwumike, Brittney Sykes, and Gabby Williams explore free agency, the Storm retain promising talents such as center Dominique Malonga. A new collective bargaining agreement also increases salaries, intensifying competition across the league, making leadership and coaching stability crucial.
Raman’s appointment highlights the growing diversity and inclusion in women’s professional basketball. It bridges NBA and WNBA coaching expertise, offering fresh perspectives and modern strategies. Her leadership is expected to cultivate team cohesion, guide younger players, and strengthen Seattle’s chances in upcoming seasons.
As Raman begins her tenure, the Seattle Storm aim to rebuild and compete for championships while fostering a culture of professionalism and excellence. Her historic hiring signals a new era for the franchise and demonstrates the league’s commitment to recognizing talent beyond traditional boundaries.
