Actor Paridhi Sharma, known for her roles in popular TV shows like Jodha Akbar and Patiala Babes, is all set to make her silver screen debut next month with the film Haq. The transition from television to cinema is, according to Paridhi, “a big one,” marking a new chapter in her 15-year-long career in the entertainment industry.
Interestingly, Haq is inspired by real events from Paridhi’s hometown of Indore, particularly the famous Shah Bano case from the 1980s. “When the film came my way and I was on-board, I realized it’s based on a real-life incident of the Shah Bano case, which happened in Indore. Since it’s my hometown, I had already heard about it,” Paridhi shared.
The film, however, has landed in legal trouble. The daughter of the late Shah Bano Begum has issued a legal notice to the filmmakers and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), demanding an immediate halt to its release. Responding to the controversy, Paridhi stated, “We are living in a democracy; someone, somewhere will and can object to certain things, especially if a film is based on true events. Yeh toh hona tha hi because the film is based on a true incident, and with such films, we always have different thoughts and perceptions. While shooting, we focused on treating the story with complete honesty. There is scope to sort things out, I suggest you please watch it first and then decide.”
In Haq, Paridhi portrays Iram, the sister of Emraan Hashmi’s character. She describes her role as representing “a woman of that era who believed in complete patriarchy,” highlighting the contrast between societal norms of the time and modern perspectives.
Paridhi’s journey from television to films has been deliberate and introspective. After years on the small screen, she took a break of over three-and-a-half years to unlearn and retrain for cinema. “After doing TV for the longest time, I decided that I needed to unlearn and switch to films with a different approach. That’s why I took a break, trained, did workshops, and then got this film,” she explained.
Adding to her momentum, Paridhi revealed that she will soon begin work on another film slated to be shot in Kashmir, which also features actor Rajeev Khandelwal.
With her debut film navigating both critical and legal scrutiny, audiences are now keen to see Paridhi Sharma make her mark on the big screen, bringing her television experience and dedication to a story rooted in real-life events.
