Farmers from Sindh, including Hamza Khan Kalhoro, Abdul Hafeez Khoso, and Abdul Khaliq Leghari, have convened a press conference to unveil their intention to file a climate responsibility lawsuit in Germany. This legal action targets two significant firms, RWE and Heidelberg Materials, recognized as prominent global CO2 emitters. The farmers are determined to hold these companies accountable for climate-related damages that have severely impacted their lives and livelihoods.
The farmers articulated that the catastrophic 2022 floods resulted in ruinous losses, obliterating crops, livestock, and homes, and driving countless families into prolonged economic hardship. They underlined that Pakistan, while contributing less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, faces severe repercussions from extreme climatic events. The lawsuit, submitted under German civil law, is anchored in the “polluter pays” principle and aims to secure compensation for the suffering they have endured.
Nasir Mansoor, a leader from the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF), emphasized that climate change poses a serious challenge to both labor and livelihoods. He noted that recurrent climate shocks detrimentally affect rural employment and food security, exacerbating inequality. He commended the farmers’ initiative to pursue legal recourse and highlighted the necessity for climate justice to protect vulnerable communities from the impacts of global warming.
Experts advocating for the farmers pointed out that the 2022 floods should not be regarded merely as a “natural disaster” but rather as a consequence of human-induced climate change. Dr. Shaikh Tanveer Ahmed from HANDS Welfare Foundation stated that communities are unjustly suffering the consequences of emissions they did not contribute to. International legal authorities, including Miriam Saage-Maab from ECCHR and Karin Zennig from Medico International, asserted that this case amplifies the voices of marginalized communities in international discourse and showcases the emerging significance of climate litigation in interlinking science, human rights, and accountability.
With support from various local and global organizations, the farmers urged the international community to acknowledge climate-induced losses as issues of justice and moral obligation. With 43 Sindhi farmers participating in this claim, they aspire that this legal effort will push corporations to accept responsibility and bolster global initiatives aimed at preventing future climate calamities. This case is perceived as a pivotal move toward holding polluting firms accountable for the havoc wrought by climate change.
