Ship That Hit US Bridge Passed 2 Inspections Last Year

Singapore's port authority announced on Wednesday that a cargo vessel, involved in the collapse of a key Baltimore bridge, had cleared two overseas inspections in 2023.

The port authority assured that the ship had valid certificates for structural integrity and equipment functionality at the time of the incident. It also noted the repair of a faulty fuel pressure gauge in June.

Following the mishap, investigators from Singapore and the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau are en route to Baltimore to aid the US Coast Guard.

The Singapore-flagged ship encountered a momentary loss of propulsion before striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge, leading to its collapse and obstruction of the commercial harbor.

The Port of Baltimore ranks ninth in the US for foreign cargo volume and value, supporting over 15,000 direct jobs and nearly 140,000 indirect ones.

Amid the incident aftermath, US authorities have halted their search for six missing individuals, citing cold water temperatures and time constraints.
