His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, spoke about how important it is to protect our identity. He said that identity is the foundation of a strong and united society. Without identity, a society has no roots.

He explained that we must protect both tangible heritage—like old buildings, ancient objects, and historical places—and intangible heritage, such as traditional songs, dances, and chants. His Highness believes that these cultural treasures must be passed down to the younger generation so they don’t forget where they came from.

His Highness shared this message during a phone call on the Direct Line radio program, which was broadcast on Sharjah Broadcasting Authority. He spoke with Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, who is the Director General of the Authority.

During the call, someone asked about the meaning of the Arabic word "Al Zubarah." His Highness kindly explained that the word “Al Zubarah” means “building.” He said that in Arabic, “Zabarah” is used to describe stones stacked on top of each other, like when you build a wall or put stones inside a well. For example, the saying "Zabar Al Bi’r" means to place a stone inside the well.

He reminded everyone that preserving heritage is not only about keeping old things, but also about practicing traditions. Children need to see and experience these traditions to learn about them. He said, “Heritage can only be protected through practice. This is how children learn. It’s a way of teaching, and this is where identity comes from.”

His Highness added that every person has a role in protecting their society. This starts at home, then moves to the neighborhood, and finally to the whole country. People should also protect the environment and stay away from gossip, bad behavior, and anything harmful to the community.

He gave kind advice to young people, saying:“We tell our sons and daughters that this society is a trust. So, give back to your country by speaking kindly and avoiding bad words. Stay away from arguments on social media. Don’t copy others blindly. Protect your homeland—the same land where your fathers lived and your grandfathers were buried.”

He ended his talk by saying he hopes that all future generations will grow up knowing their religious, national, and community responsibilities.

His message was warm, thoughtful, and full of care for the people and traditions of Sharjah and the UAE.
