His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, presided over the third meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Sharjah Maritime Academy (SMA) on Thursday morning. During this significant gathering, the board approved the graduation of 31 students from the Academy’s inaugural cohort, all of whom have successfully completed their academic studies and practical training, earning bachelor’s degrees in their respective fields.
In a key announcement, His Highness introduced the Academy's initiative to establish postgraduate programs in maritime transport and engineering. This strategic move aims to enhance the educational landscape for graduates, facilitate research opportunities, and cultivate expertise in the maritime sector. He emphasized the necessity of continuously updating the academic programs to align with the latest technological advancements and innovations in the industry.
Expressing his appreciation, His Highness commended the administrative and academic initiatives that contributed to the successful graduation of the first group of students. He highlighted that these graduates are poised to become pivotal contributors to the nation and the maritime sector, equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact.

The meeting also addressed the Academy’s budget for the upcoming year, alongside updates to the organizational structure, amendments to executive regulations, the internal audit charter, and various reports from the permanent internal committee. These discussions encompassed a range of administrative, academic, technical, and social issues, with periodic reports reviewed to assess the Academy's progress and future goals.
Dr. Hashim Abdullah Bin Sarhan Al Zaabi, Director of the Sharjah Maritime Academy, presented a comprehensive report detailing the Academy’s achievements in both academic and administrative areas. He emphasized the importance of ongoing initiatives aimed at developing and regularly reviewing academic programs to ensure they remain at the forefront of maritime transport and engineering education. He further stressed the implementation of top-tier training programs and activities that enhance the academic curriculum.
The meeting saw attendance from various esteemed members, including Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ports, Customs, and Free Zones Authority; Ali Saeed bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Public Works; Dr. Mansour Mohammed bin Nassar, Chairman of the Sharjah Government Legal Department; Dr. Salah Butti Obaid Bin Butti Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Authority for Initiatives Implementation; Dr. Ali Abdullah Saif Hilal Al Naqbi, Chancellor of the University of Khorfakkan; Dr. Saif Khamis Ahmed Abdullah Al Naqbi, Commander of the Marine Sciences Wing at the Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Naval College; Abdullah Hamad bin Nasser Al Owais, Executive Vice President and Head of Bank Deposits at Sharjah Islamic Bank; Salem Mohammed Al Kindi, member of the Kalba Municipal Council; Professor Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, Vice-President (Academic Affairs) of the World Maritime University (WMU); and Dr. Aisha Bukhatir Al Shamsi, Director of the Admission Department at the University of Sharjah.
This meeting marked a significant step forward for the Sharjah Maritime Academy, reinforcing its commitment to excellence in maritime education and its vital role in shaping the future of the maritime industry in the region.
